Head of People

OUR COMPANY

Formed by experienced renewable energy professionals in 2020, Cloudbreak is already one of the leading commercial and community solar developers in the United States. Our mission is to accelerate the growth in domestic renewable energy capacity while also bringing economic benefits to communities across the country.

We are executing on this mission by developing projects that save local residents and businesses money on their electric bills, generate significant tax revenue, create well-paying, local jobs, and diversify utility generation with renewable energy.

Our team is a tightly-knit group that is passionate about deploying high quality distributed solar and storage solutions. When we aren’t building renewable energy projects, we love to ski, board, bike, hike, camp, see live music, and dine together. As passionate outdoor-loving people, we believe climate change poses an existential risk to both the places we love and humanity itself. Harnessing the sun to generate renewable electricity with zero carbon emissions is one of the most tangible ways to slow climate change.

If you are passionate about accelerating the transition to renewable energy and willing to roll up your sleeves to solve hard problems, this is the place for you.

THE POSITION

Cloudbreak Energy is seeking a Head of People who is equal parts strategist and operator. Someone who can think carefully about culture and org design one moment, and run payroll and troubleshoot a benefits enrollment issue the next. This is our first dedicated People hire, and it’s a foundational role.

You’ll partner directly with the leadership team to shape how Cloudbreak grows: building the processes, systems, and culture that will carry us from a startup to a scaled clean energy company. This is not a role for someone who wants to manage a large team from day one or hand off the tactical work. You’ll own it all, and you’ll take pride in that. But it is a tremendous opportunity for someone who wants to leave a lasting mark on a mission-driven company at a pivotal moment in its growth.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Culture & People Strategy

  • Partner with leadership to define, articulate, and build on Cloudbreak’s culture as the company scales, preserving what makes us great while evolving what needs to grow.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the leadership team and a resource for all employees on people-related matters.
  • Develop and refine people policies and an employee handbook that reflect our values and keep us compliant across the states where we operate.

Recruiting & Talent Acquisition

  • Own the full recruiting lifecycle, including job postings, sourcing, coordinating interviews, managing offers, and closing candidates, in close partnership with hiring managers and leadership.
  • Build and maintain scalable recruiting processes, templates, and an ATS that keeps us organized and moving fast.
  • Develop a strong employer brand that reflects who we are and attracts mission-aligned talent.

Onboarding & Offboarding

  • Design and continuously improve a structured onboarding experience that sets new hires up for success from day one and immerses them in Cloudbreak’s culture.
  • Manage offboarding with care and professionalism, including exit interviews and knowledge transfer.

Performance & Development

  • Build and manage Cloudbreak’s performance review and feedback processes from design through execution.
  • Partner with managers to develop career pathing, growth conversations, and tools that help our people develop and thrive.
  • Support leadership on headcount planning, organizational design, and workforce strategy as the company evolves.

HR Operations, Payroll & Benefits

  • Run and own payroll, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Manage all HR systems and lead any transitions or upgrades as we scale.
  • Administer employee benefits programs and serve as the primary point of contact for employees on benefits questions.
  • Proactively research, benchmark, and recommend new or enhanced benefits that keep Cloudbreak competitive and reflect our values as an employer.
  • Ensure compliance with employment law across all states where Cloudbreak has employees.

Office & Team Experience

  • Plan and execute monthly team events that bring people together and reinforce our culture.
  • Own the planning and logistics for our annual company offsite, with an eye toward destinations and experiences that reflect who we are (think mountains, adventure, and great food).
  • Manage Cloudbreak’s Boulder, CO office, keeping it a place people actually want to come to work, including vendor relationships, supplies, and day-to-day operations.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • 6+ years of progressive HR or People experience, with meaningful time spent building or scaling People functions at startups or high-growth companies. You’ve seen what it looks like to build from scratch and know what works.
  • A true generalist who is equally comfortable with culture and strategy as with HRIS administration and running payroll. No task is beneath you.
  • Demonstrated experience owning full-cycle recruiting, HR operations, performance management, and employee relations.
  • Strong working knowledge of employment law and multi-state HR compliance.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and a high degree of ownership. You follow through, you keep things moving, and you don’t let things fall through the cracks.
  • Excellent communicator who can build trust with employees at all levels and handle sensitive situations with discretion and empathy.
  • Growth mindset: you’re excited to build something, not just maintain it.
  • Solar, energy, or climate-adjacent background is a plus, but genuine passion for the mission matters more.
  • Boulder-based or willing to relocate strongly preferred.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

  • Competitive salary: $115,000 – $155,000, depending on experience.
  • Performance-based bonuses, with a 20% target.
  • Unlimited PTO.
  • 401(k) with up to 4% match, vesting on the first day of employment.
  • Health, Vision, and Dental Insurance.
  • Generous Parental Leave.

Occasional travel may be required. The expected salary range and benefits package is noted above. However, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Further details on the full package may be provided if the candidate reaches the final round of interviews.
